Our history

“Il glicine” means wisteria tree, which grew to protect our home long before I was born.

At the age of nine months, in 1987, I did my first sunbathing here and I was held in the arms of my grandmother Florinda’s sisters who, unlike her, had remained all their lives in Conca dei Marini, my great-aunts with their long and flowing white hair, which I helped them to collect in a large bun, and their black mourning clothes. They had also held my father before me, since his first summer in 1955.

The house belonged to my grandmother’s family, the Viviani family.

There were ten children, four girls and six boys. They lived upstairs, while on the ground floor were the cellars, with animals, cheese and plenty of real treats.

The war struck their family and the home in 1940. Before that, there was bathing down at the Fiordo di Furore (Fjord of Furore) where my great-grandfather used to make flour with the mill, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. My grandmother used to tell me that in the 1930s, when she was a little girl, she used to swim together with her sisters and also together with whales and sperm whales, which she saw from above the bridge swimming clumsily with their giant tails in the sea off the Amalfi Coast.

The house was rebuilt by my great-grandfather, after the bombs of 1943 partially damaged it, going through a rebirth in the years of reconstruction and economic boom: my grandfather took charge of it, and to him we owe the geometric designs of some tiles, exquisitely 1970s in feel. The last historical period dates back to the beginning of the 2000s: the years of my father. The years when our family decided to share our memories with others, so that some of those feelings can be felt by every traveller who stays in our rooms, full of stories.
